Armadillos are famous for their hard outer shell and very sharp claws. They are extremely powerful diggers and prefer areas that are sandy or close to water since they may dig more easily there. Armadillos are extremely determined and will make their way through most substances. They rely largely on their ability to hear and smell when hunting for grubs and worms. This is why they are associated with holes all around the exterior of peoples’ homes.
As a direct consequence of the armadillos burrowing and rooting while consuming, they are called pests to people who like to garden or maintain a yard. They’ll dig tiny holes throughout the lawn searching for grubs and worms. Many times they’re mistaken for moles or voles. Their burrows around the perimeter of buildings are easily recognizable and can result in a substantial amount of damage to the house. They can dig a hole as deep as 10-20 feet beneath a structure resulting in damaged or cracked foundations, not to mention the destruction caused by any underground wires or pipes.
are possums dangerous, Although they’re not a substantial risk for transmitting pathogens or diseases, their low body temperatures make them susceptible to a range of diseases. They are used in laboratory studies for leprosy research. Again, the low body temperature makes them more at risk for the disease. This is not a concern unless their meat is eaten uncooked or handled without proper hand-washing techniques. This is typically not a problem for most people.
Trapping and removing armadillos from your property is the only solution to the problems they produce. Unlike other creatures, armadillos do not respond to lure, making it a little more difficult to coax into a snare. With a little patience and enough experience, they can be properly removed. There are many deterrents on the market designed to rid you of your armadillo issues. Most prove to be unsuccessful, like the very common use of moth balls. Moth balls aren’t capable of deterring armadillos although they are excellent human deterrents. The first step in discouraging armadillos from the yard should be to rid the area of their primary attractant and food source: grubs and bugs. Since they primarily find their way around by scent, houses that have dogs seem to be less affected by armadillos.
